National ID loss: How to get ‘temporary ID’/recommendation letter from NIRA

These days a national ID is a very crucial instrument since you need to apply for an ePassport, get a new sim card among other key documents in Uganda.

But some people haven’t got their IDs (see how to apply for a national ID), others lost them (see how to replace a lost ID) but they need to get the above items or travel abroad.

Having that in mind, NIRA provides an option where you can apply for a recommendation letter to, say, replace a passport. (Remember, you can’t get the new ePassport without a national ID.)

This process is being conducted only at NIRA offices in Kololo, Kampala.

First, you will download a form for confirmation of information from the NIRA website.

After filling it, you’ll pay Shs1,000 (exclusive of bank charges) to any URA revenue collection bank such as Bank of Africa, Diamond Trust Bank, Stanbic, Barclays, Orient etc.

Then, you’ll attach the receipt to the filled form and submit to the Inquiries Desk at NIRA headquarters at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
