Tech events to look out for this coming week

Tech events in Kampala

SautiTech has introduced a special product. Since we kicked off work in May, we’ve so far unveiled two products, a weekly roundup of the biggest stories and another that is done at the end of the month. Beginning with today, Sunday, we shall be doing a report on events that will happening in a very week. Big Date 4 Good Breakfast

 

With the increased use of Big Data across the world, The United Nations Pulse Lab, Kampala has organized an event at the Innovation Village (partners) to share insights on the potential use of data for the good of private companies.

The event will take place from 9:00am to noon.

The discussions will rotate around the projects and technologies developed by the Lab to analyse mobile, satellite and social media data. Big data is increasingly used around the world to better address sustainable development and humanitarian challenges.

LAN Reloaded

The event will gather key ICT stakeholders and enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, academicians and policymakers to promote networking among the members of the growing ICT ecosystem. The event will take place at BMK House in Kampala from 5:00 pm. It is free to members of the ICT Association of Uganda (ICTAU); non-members will pay Shs20,000.

Social Media Conference

The Social Media Conference is being organised by Konrad Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and Media Challenge Initiative. To analyze the impact social media has had on society, different stakeholders from government, civil society and academia will meet at Mackinnon Suites in Kampala to specifically look at how Digital Information has affected society’s opinions and democracy.

The event will feature panelists like Hon. Annet Nyakecho (member of the parliamentary committee on ICT), Vincent Ng’ethe (Deputy Editor Africa Check) and Bernard Tabaire (Director of Programs-ACME Uganda). It will be divided into three sessions, with the first session looking at Understanding Hate Speech and the second will be an indepth analysis of Facebook algorithms and how they affect content and the third will focus on how social media users can create online content for civic engagement.

The morning session is for pre-registered attendants whereas the afternoon session starting 2:00 pm is open to the public. Related: Social media conference 2018: What to expect

Introduction to Containerization using Docker

Organised by Google Cloud Development Club (GCDC), Kampala, the event will be held at Outbox Hub, Lumumba Avenue in Kampala from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Collins Asimwe, a developer with Andela will take fellow developers through ways they can containerize apps using Docker technology.

Online content contribution and blogging with WordPress

To be held at Hive Collab, Kanjokya Street in Kampala from 9:00 am-12:00 noon, the event will mainly feature the blogging community of Uganda, who will gather to learn on how they can improve on their online content through the use of WordPress. Other skills to be picked at the event will include basic set up of a WordPress blog. Bloggers will also get a chance to ask technical questions about WordPress blogs.
