Andela Uganda graduates 38 in its Women in Tech program

Andela Uganda graduated the fifth cycle of its flagship program for Women in Technology. The Andela Women Tech-leadership program is a six weeks’ program  that focuses on equipping women for professional software delivery.

For this particular cycle, which was launched on 15th August 2019, 53 ladies participated focusing on the fundamentals of software development and delivery, career guidance and leadership skills. It is out of this that 38 received their completion certificates.

Some of the training sessions covered over the 7 weeks included; i) Introduction to HTML and CSS ii)Basics of Javascript iii) Introduction to web APIs iv) Version control with Git v) Writing Professionally vi) Working on Team / Collaboration and vii) Project management with Trello

Outside the certificate awarded to the participants at the end of the program, it is an opportunity for the ladies to grow their networks. Top performers from the program are to be placed with local partner companies for an internship opportunity. It is an opportunity for them to work on real world products and grow professionally.

The goal of this program is to increase the number of women in the tech space and groom tech leaders who will in turn champion initiatives to elevate the tech craft.

Recently, Andela decided to close the D0 program in Uganda and letting go 77 junior engineers in the country – while placing central focus on its pan-African hub in Rwanda. The program was to train developers from scratch.

The Andela country director in Uganda, Ms Jackie Ochola, stated that the restructure will not affect operations in Uganda. This is because the company is restructuring its talent pool to align with global market demands.
